here's the Frill Free Zone Newsletter November 01, 2025 |
Did you learn any lessons this year? I grew some things this season that I won't bother with again. Let's have a look, shall we? November 1 2025This is the run up to the shortest day, so daylight is in short supply. Luckily, you stocked up on grow lights for seedlings and cuttings . After paying $30 each for two fucshia hanging baskets, you bet I took cuttings off them before completely pruning them off to spend the winter in the basement. Hopefully, they will recover from the rough treatment and continue to bring me much joy.So what else am I growing under lights right now? I kept six Streptocarpus, after growing them in tiny two inch clay pots, I repotted them into six inch squat pots. They rewarded me with many blooms, in varying colors and shapes. My big complaint about them is the size of their leaves! They are an ungainly plant, so that's why they are now reduced in number. I just wouldn't be able to grow anything at all, if I still had the approximately forty that I started with. Growing streptocarpus from seed is the fun part, and I do like growing them from cuttings - they grow new plants from the leaves, like African violets. I also kept six geraniums, and some cuttings that I took off the ones growing in the window box. These were seed grown from one of the Canadian seed catalogues I often purchase from. I might stick with what really worked in the garden, which was nasturtiums, although the morning glories grew like kudzu, they only started flowering near the killing frost, which looks terrible as the leaves all got hit, and then they have the gorgeous flowers on top of that. What will you grow, and what won't you grow again?
