Oooh, spooky! October is well known to be the scariest month, and there are a few reasons why.

October 15 2025

First of all, it's Halloween, which brings out the witch in all of us. If your broom is idling, get ready to use it, whether it's to sweep, or to fly. Just kidding. No witches were hurt in the writing of this email.

Gardening might seem to be over, but there are a few things to take care of. Check out the fall gardening tour for some useful tips to make your garden better next year.

One thing to absolutely do in the garden this year will be to collect some fall leaves . They are the most amazing soil builders. If you only get a couple of bags, they will just break down over the winter if you put a couple of shovels of regular garden soil in them, or keep them dry to cover the kitchen scraps as you add them to the compost. Or chop them by running over them with the lawn mower and mulch with them. There are no downsides to leaves. Unless they are walnut, in which case, leave them where they lie.

In the household department, there might be good things happening in the kitchen. I made some green tomato chutney, and a friend gave me two jars of her mustard pickles. I've got out of the habit of making dill pickles and all the other things, but I do like a bit of bite from the sauce type pickles.
