Oh boy, spring is here with a vengeance. The grass is green, fruit trees are blooming, those first big bumble bees are humming around. I'm having so much fun trying to decide on what to tackle first.

When the weather is this nice, so suddenly, it's hard to know where to settle. That's where time management on the homestead comes into play. There are ways to determine what projects to tackle first so that you don't just end up with a lot of unfinished tasks. It's important to first have a vision for your homestead and decide what's important to you. Do you just want to have fresh food to eat, give your children a wholesome outdoor upbringing? Or make money at one particular activity, and the rest can be funded by an outside job?

There are things to ask yourself before you can even get started. It's not enough to just have the dream of the homesteading lifestyle.

If you are expecting a utopian farm, where nothing ever goes wrong, you may be in for a shock. Garden problems can occur at any point, sometimes destroying your hopes immediately. Things like a tornado or hailstorm pummeling your crop into the ground, or a flash flood are not something you can plan for. Other things are, so be prepared. The joy of bringing in a good harvest of tomatoes, or a healthy clutch of chicks for a bit of a bonus, or any other success, can make it all worthwhile. Don't give up at the first hurdle!
