July is when I most often get questions about composting. I guess after all the seeding and planting is done, there's a lull in the action, and attention turns to the compost bin.

Whether you're new to composting, and gardening in general, or you are an old hand at it, there's always something new to learn. This is a lifelong education, growing things!

Don't ever be afraid to ask questions, or do some experiments on your own. One of the best resources I have been lucky enough to have is the Rodale books. They are some of the most intensively researched and easy to read.

If you can get your own copy, great, otherwise they are usually to be found in the local library. That's where a lot of my knowledge came from originally, then I branched out on my own.

One question people ask is why is my compost so hot?

Some causes are relatively easy to fix, other times there are risks involved. Find out what to do if your compost is going great guns - you want some heat, but you don't want actual flames!
