We're on the downhill slide to spring, and it's time to gather all the seed sowing supplies together.

February 15 2026

It's easy to get too enthusiastic, sow seeds with wild abandon in the middle of January, and end up with leggy weak seedlings. Don't be this person. In the middle of February, it's safe to start sowing some seeds that take a while to mature to planting size, like Petunias and other small seeded plants.

Between getting all the flats, soil mix and seeds together, you would be forgiven for being eager, but it's essential to look on the seed package for time to harvest, and best sowing date.

One of the best and cheapest things I've got is a sprinkle bottle for watering seedlings that have emerged and produced their first real leaves, not to seed leaves. These are usually a different shape, with the seed leaves echoing the shape of the seed coat, and the first real leaves more like what you would expect from the adult plant.

However you grow your seedlings, don't get sucked in to all the fancy peat pots and specially designed flats. They need nothing more than a yogurt container with a few holes punched in the bottom. Don't make it harder than it needs to be.

So consider this your sign; it's safe to get going on seeding. Happy spring!
